La Ceiba Farm: Agriculture
La Ceiba is committed to the sustainable production of coffee, plantain, and guadua--the predominant variety of bamboo in the region. Respect for the Earth, our water sources, and the air are central goals to our agricultural practices, and we strive to minimize our carbon footprint.
To achieve our goals, natural fertilizers are used throughout our farm; the use of chemical agents is limited to those rare occasions when the crops are in danger, and never when the plants are in production.
The technology employed to process our coffee saves water and energy, and we filter the byproducts of the process before we return them to the earth. Coffee pulp is composted to be used as fertilizer.
The Castillo-Naranjales variety that we have in production is naturally resistant to some fungi, which helps us minimize the use of fungicides.
At La Ceiba we are proud of the quality of our coffee, which has received over 85 points in independent tastings.
